Today Time: 1 hour Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the students should be able to: Define and illustrate the following key terms: accident, emergency, disaster, catastrophe, hazard, and hazard event Differentiate among three types of disasters Identify the estimated losses for eight types of hazard events or disasters Differentiate among four types of disaster impacts Explain which states are most hazard prone and why Identify and illustrate three social factors that are causing disasters to increase in number and severity Scope: Overview of terms related to disasters of varied types and the estimated losses due to them; differentiation of disaster impacts and national distribution of them; and social factors causing disasters to increase and defects in current disaster loss assessments.
