Article of science and technology 3.6. Other health outcomes Seafood consumption is also associated with beneficial out-comes in relation to infant development, mental health, cognitive decline. As discussed above most research in these areas has focused on the VLC-PUFAs but all or some of the other nutrients found in seafood may play an important part in relation to all such health effects. Just because most research has focused on the fatty acid content of fish this does not mean this is the only factor of importance and the failure to find benefit in intervention trials with fish oils may in part be due to an over simplified interpretation of observational data. It is therefore important to identify more accurately what nutrients are present in seafood and what seafood is being consumed in future studies. This should include taurine content until it is established whether or not this is an important nutrient for optimal human health. Article of science and technology 4. Sustainability of a seafood diet Seafood and freshwater fisheries are an important aspect of global food security, providing inexpensive protein in many developing countries. Small scale fisheries are also a major source of export income to many such countries (Allison et al., 2011). Concerns as to the sustainability of increased fish consumption have been widely discussed (Food and Agriculture Organization– FAO, 2010), with provision of VLC-PUFAs for human consumption presenting specific problems (Sargent & Tacon, 1999). Aquaculture would appear to provide an obvious solution to the problem of reduced fish stocks except that the feed used has traditionally contained high quantities of fishmeal, and for some species such as salmon, ome-ga-3 fatty acids, all sourced from the marine environment. There is, as a result, considerable effort in the aquaculture sector to reduce reliance on fishmeal and to design feeds based on plant protein(Gatlin et al., 2007). However, care in the design of the feeds i
