AstronomerssuchasGalileoGalileiandJohannesKeplerputthese ideasintopractice, fundamentallyalteringhumanity’sunderstandingofthecosmos.Inthemidstofthisscientific revolutionwasahumblebook, MathematicalRecreations ,originallypublishedinFrenchas Récréations Mathématiquesin1624.ThebookwaswrittenbyJeanLeurechonunderthe pseudonymHendrikVanEttenandfirstappearedinEnglishprintin1633,translatedbyWilliam 1 Oughtred . Itwasprintedinoctavoform,withpagesinsetsof16,andmeasured4incheswide and6.5inchestall.Thebookitselfconsistedofover100“problems,” demonstrationsof scientifically basedtricksorfacts.Importantly,LeurechonwroteMathematicalRecreations fora broadaudience,likelyhopingtoexposepeopleacrossEuropetoscientificwonders.Analysisof itscontentsilluminatesnotonlytheearlystateofscientificunderstanding,butalsothepolitical andreligiousconditionsoftheworldithelpedinfluence.
