struggledwithlanguagecomprehensionandcouldnotsolvemathproblems.Today,AIsystemsroutinelyexceed

humanperformanceonstandardbenchmarks.

Progressacceleratedin2023.Newstate-of-the-artsystemslikeGPT-4,Gemini,andClaude3areimpressively

multimodal:Theycangeneratefluenttextindozensoflanguages,processaudio,andevenexplainmemes.AsAI

hasimproved,ithasincreasinglyforceditswayintoourlives.CompaniesareracingtobuildAI-basedproducts,

andAIisincreasinglybeingusedbythegeneralpublic.ButcurrentAItechnologystillhassignificantproblems.It

cannotreliablydealwithfacts,performcomplexreasoning,orexplainitsconclusions.

AIfacestwointerrelatedfutures.First,technologycontinuestoimproveandisincreasinglyused,havingmajor

consequencesforproductivityandemployment.Itcanbeputtobothgoodandbaduses.Inthesecondfuture,

theadoptionofAIisconstrainedbythelimitationsofthetechnology.Regardlessofwhichfutureunfolds,

governmentsareincreasinglyconcerned.Theyaresteppingintoencouragetheupside,suchasfundinguniversity

RDandincentivizingprivateinvestment.Governmentsarealsoaimingtomanagethepotentialdownsides,such

asimpactsonemployment,privacyconcerns,misinformation,andintellectualpropertyrights.

AsAIrapidlyevolves,theAIIndexaimstohelptheAIcommunity,policymakers,businessleaders,journalists,and

thegeneralpublicnavigatethiscomplexlandscape.Itprovidesongoing,objectivesnapshotstrackingseveral

keyareas:technicalprogressinAIcapabilities,thecommunitya
