diagnosingandappraisingthecurrentstrategicsituation.
Someofthesemodelsareknownbyacronyms,suchasthePESTor
SWOTchecklists.Somearerepresentedasmatrices,suchasthe
BostonMatrix.Othersarediagrtic,suchasPorters5-sor
theValueChain.
AtPaperP3,youshouldbebothfamiliarwiththemodelsintheir
traditionalform,andbeabletoapplythemtodifferentscenarios.
Althoughthetextbooksdescribewhatcouldbecalledtheclassical
applicationofmodels,thevalueofthemodelsoftenliesintheir
flexibility.Toillustratethis,twowell-knownmodelsarediscussedin
thisarticle–PESTandValueChain–showinghowtheycanbe
usedtoreflectdifferentsituations.

PEST(Political,Economic,Sociological,Technological),alsoknown
asSLEPT(ludingLegal)andPESTLE(ludingLegaland
Environmental),representsthefactorsinthewiderenvironmentto
whichanorganisationneedstoreact.ThePolitical,Economic,
Sociological,andTechnologicalelementsareusuallyappliedata
macro-level,totheworldatlarge.Theycan,however,bescaled
downtoshowinternal,organisationalinfluencesonagiventarget
department.
