As a historical period in English literature, the age of Romanticism extends from 1798, when Wordsworth and Coleridge published their Lyrical Ballads , to the 1832, when all the Romantic writers were either dead or no longer productive. Romanticism, the predominant literary mode of the first third of the 19th century, was expressed almost entirely in poetry. The ideals of French Revolution --- liberty, equality and fraternity --- had a very strong influence upon the writers during this period. As a way of thinking and as an approach to literature, Romanticism is associated with vitality, powerful emotion, limitless and dreamlike ideas. The Age of Romanticism (1798-1830s) The First Generation of Romantics William Wordsworth [威 廉·华兹华斯](1770- 1850) is most celebrated for his poetry of nature. His love for nature is boundless. To him the nature has moral value and had its philosophical significance. His masterpieces include: Preface to Lyrical Ballads （抒情歌谣序） ( the manifesto of Romanticism), Daffodils （黄水仙） \ I Wondered Lonely as A Cloud （我似一 片孤独的 流云） Samuel Taylor Coleridge （塞缪尔·泰勒·柯勒律治） (1772-1834), poet and critic. He began to reading books at the age of three, and by the time he was six he had read the Bible, Robinson Crusoe and A Thousand and One Nights. He studied at Cambridge from 1791 to 1793, and left it without taking his degree. His representative work is The Rime Of the Ancient Mariner （古舟子咏）. The long poem written in ballad form. The albatross, a sea bird, is an omen of luck. A seaman for no reason at all kills the bird, and for this reason the whole ship is punished by God. The theme is about sin and punishment.
