Because different countries have different histories, cultures, social customs, thinking mode and behavior standard, it is not a simple thing for nations to communicate effectively without adequate knowledge of other cultures. It is not enough for people to communicate successfully with a good knowledge of English. Culture plays a crucial role in intercultural communication. Sometimes, even if one has a good knowledge of English and can speak English very well, he may find it difficult to understand correctly and properly the intentions of speakers with different cultural backgrounds.In order to communicate successfully, people need to be familiar with the communicative skills besides having the linguistic knowledge. Although linguistic knowledge is the basic foundation for people with different cultural backgrounds, the intercultural communicative competence is especially important. Because of the great differences, people will confront with communicative difficulty if they use language in inappropriate situations or disobey the local social customs.Culture and intercultural communication are two different concepts, but they are directly linked. Culture is learned, acted out, transmitted and preserved through communication. When culture differs, communication practices may also differ.The successful intercultural communication requires not only the linguistic proficiency, but also a good understanding of cultural differences.
