A Brief Introduction about the Author Charles Dickens, the author of A Tale of Two Cities, is the greatest representative of English critical realism in Victorian age. In the modern history of English literature, Dickens is the only writer who can be compared with Shakespeare. His novels belong to the most valuable part of critical realistic works of 19th century. In 1812, Dickens was born at land-port, a harbor located in the suburb of Portsmouth. His father, a staff of navy military supply office who used to live in an easeful and comfortable life like a gentleman, failed to manage the finance and finally entered the jail due to getting into debt. Dickens ended up with leading his happy life and had to work to feed his family. Such an experience in his life makes him understand the misery of the poor living at the bottom of the society and he feels sympathetic to the helpless children and hungry poor people. He defends the poor and is fiercely against the injustices caused by the powerful rich. The tribute to Charles Dickens engraved in Westminster Abbey’s honored Poet’s Corner calls him?“a sympathizer with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death one of England’s greatest writers.”1 B. At the same time, he dislikes the bloody revolution. He prefers to take some reforms to reconcile the contradiction between the aristocrats and the peasants. In fact, the society of England in later the 19th century was remarkably like
