Introduction ?‘Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.’1 This is how the linguist David Wilkins summed up the importance of vocabulary learning. English vocabulary learning is the primary and essential part of English learning because one can not express anything perfectly without vocabulary, and it can not carry on the basic language communication such as listening, reading, writing and translation if there is no vocabulary. The advent of the communicative approach in the 1970s makes us think of the role of vocabulary. Recognition of the meaning-making potential of words means that vocabulary becomes a learning objective in its own right.? In 1984, Swan and Walter wrote that?“vocabulary acquisition is the largest and most important task facing the language learner.” in the introduction to their Cambridge English Course2. The traditional English vocabulary teaching is a duck-stuffing way. It only needs teachers’ mouths and pieces of chalk. The students just act as receivers of knowledge. This kind of teaching greatly prevents the students’ initiative in learning. Most importantly, students apt to built a one-to-one relationship between the English word and its meaning regardless of its connotation, which leads that students are not able to use or understand English correctly in real condition. Thus, the greatest problem of vocabulary learning is spending too much time without efficiency it deserves. It is time to take measures to solve this problem in terms of learning strategies. The eclectic approach is the right way to be improved efficiency. II. The Eclectic Approach In 1929, the famous Coleman Report American Modern Language Teaching had a conclusion that there was no simple methods that can make foreign language learning successful.3 However, Eclectic approach is quite a mixed way.
