Introduction?The study of modern linguistics shows that language is not only used to transmit messages, but also make clear the social relationship between two people. Appellation is an extreme large system of language. Appellations are common phenomena in human verbal communication in daily life and universal across cultures, and they are barometers of interpersonal relationship. The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defines appellation as the correct title or name that you use for someone when you are speaking to them.1 Fasold states that appellations are the words speakers used to designate the person they are talking to while they are talking to them.2 It is easy to judge the interrelated factor between social groups and language by appellation, so the appellation is only a calling or contact methods used for communication, which also embodies the speaker’s cultural level, tradition, custom and social mentality and reflects the features and status of speaker’s group and occupation respectively. Using the appellation correctly and appropriately can make the further contact between people easier in the social intercourse. In linguistic communication, appellation is always the first information transmitted to others. Proper appellation will make the communication go smoothly. In different culture climates, the same appellation may have different pragmatic rules and different cultural meanings. In order to avoid the appellation pragmatic failures in intercultural communication, the differences between Chinese and Western appellation should be learned. This paper compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western appellation, and analyzes the differences between Chinese and Western culture.?II.
