Growth and change in tourist demand ----the case of central Florida The state of Florida is, after California, the second most highly-visited of the United States. It attracts over 40 million tourists a year, about 7 million of whom are international visitors. Tourism is the state抯 largest industry. Domestic visitors spent an estimated US$49 billion in Florida in 1991,creating 1.5 million jobs (and so employing 24% of the total labour force).Through the 1950s and 1960s, Florida became renowned particularly for its sunbelt attractions to the senior citizens?market, with the greatest destination emphasis on Miami and other parts of Southeastern Florida. Many visitors came to stay, with the result that the state has the highest proportion of retired residents in the United States. During the 1970s and 1980s, development emphasis shifted to Central Florida, around the city of Orlando. One of the primary catalysts was the construction of over 20 theme parks, especially Walt Disney World. Rather than attracting senior citizens, these products have catered mostly for families with children, and spawned a huge lodging industry within the local area.They have also become a major base attraction for international tourists, thus generating growth in traffic and terminal facilities at the local airport.
