A ccor ing to the electron acceptors ofm icrobialm etabolism, granular slu ge can be ivi e into wt o general groups, that is, anaerobic an aerobic granular slu ge. A naerobic granular slu ge has been stu ie extensively for eca es, w hereas the interest in aerobic granular slu ge w as starte ju st several years ago. To ate, the researches on the aerobic granulation have been focuse on wt o aspects: one is on the form ation of aerobic granular slu ge on m acro-scale, in or er to optmi ize the operational param eters; the other is on the granulation m echanism s an the m icrobial iversity.
