Unit 4 Section A An analysis of the whole text structure One of the ways for discourse (语篇) organization is to project the discourse into questions and answers. Questions are therefore often used as a means of clarifying the organization of a discourse. Take a story-telling passage as an instance, where the writer poses a variety of questions as the story proceeds; these questions build a sort of expectation for the reader to continue reading to find answers. As the plot reveals itself, some of the questions will be answered while some others will be left unanswered; in the meantime, some new questions will be arising. Thus, story-telling is a process where questions will emerge at different stages, which poses a great attraction to readers to read further. The passage is a short story, and its structural organization can be brought into light when we insert some questions between paragraphs.
