Surface properties of the APTESmod ifiedATP(MATP) w ere characterized, and the ad sorption properties ofmercury ion ontoM ATP w ere stud ied. The results show that the pore diameter of the adsor bent w as enlarged by acid treatment, w hich accelerated the adsorption process, and the adsorption equilibrium of mercury on MATP w as ach ievedw ith in 30 m inutes. MATP has excellent adsorption ab ility formercury ion than original attapulgite, theQm ax increases from 38mg/g to 26mg /g. The adsorption process follow s Langmu ir i sotherm, and kinetics follow s the mechan ism of the pseudosecondorder equation. It also show s less effects of pH, ion ic strength and w ater constituents on Hg( ) uptake by chem icalmod ification of attapu lgite.
