Content About The background Brief summary of the novel Analysis of Major Characters Literary appreciation of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer Writing Style Tone Theme At that time, monopoly capitalism (垄断资本主义)prevailed in America. It was against the historical background that Mark Twain wrote the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Based on the social life , Mark Twain wrote his novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, in which he recalled his childhood. The novel satirizes the foolish religion and criticize the crime of slavery by describing white kids with a fugitive(逃亡) slave lived in a wandering life in the Mississippi river. And advertise the idea that everyone enjoys the rights of freedom regardless of race. When Injun dies, his treasure is divided between Tom and Huck, who is now adopted by Widow Douglas. Twain had made Tom the hero of American boyhood, and the book had become the classic read in schools. Twain fulfils his dream of ideal boyhood. All the cruelties and fears, wonders and joys of childhood are brought into vividness. Mark Twain based this novel largely on his personal memories of growing up but he also reflected his own ideas and the spirit of the times in the book. In this way the novel avoids a vulgar style of recollection from children. The author concentrates his satire upon the lifeless education in America at that time .In this way he enables people to understand the true nature of what is decadent and on the decline while they enjoy the humor in the book. Tom Sawyer The novel’s protagonist. Tom is a naughty boy with an active imagination who spends most of the novel getting himself, and often his friends, into and out of trouble. Tom has a good heart and a strong moral conscience. He also loved helping the poor people. Becky Thatcher The newly-moved judge’s daughter. Tom falls in love with her and tries to get “engaged” to her. Literary appreciation of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer
