Notes From : Lesson 5 Unit: Mixtures and Solutions Title: Solutions - Dissolving Forming a solution by mixing two or more materials is called dissolving (the tea dissolved in the water). What determines whether or not materials dissolve? …it’s because of attraction! The particles in a material stay together because they are attracted to each other. Sugar dissolves in water because the water particles attract a sugar particle more strongly than the other sugar particles around it can. 1 The water particles pull sugar particles away from other particles in the crystal. 2. Then the motion of the water particles carries them away. 3. This makes room for more water particles to move in and attract more sugar particles. 4. This process continues until all of the sugar is dissolved. Evaporation is the change from a liquid state to a gas state. The solvent is the substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution. There is usually more solvent than solute in a solution. Soluble means able to be dissolved in a particular solvent. - tea dissolves in water - tea is soluble in water Insoluble means not able to be dissolved in a particular solvent. - milk fat does not dissolve in water - milk fat is not soluble in water Solutes solvents may solids, liquids, or gases The Tyndall Effect is sometimes used to determine a true solution. Solutions (such as salt and water) do not scatter the light as the mixture is homogeneous. A mixture of milk and water is not homogeneous. The particles of milk fat are large enough to scatter the light.
