According to this graph, married Americans remained the same and also the highest level, 2.5million in both 1970 and 1980, and then the number began to decline to roughly 2.3million and continued this downward trend until 2000, when only 1 million residents in the US were married. On the other hand, apart from a sharp rise in the number of divorces in the 1970s, the next two decades witnessed the falling trend, from just below 1.4 million in 1980, to a little more than 1 million in 1990 and exactly 1 million in 2000. The second chart is more precise about the different marital status of the Americans between 1970 and 2000. As shown in the graph, the percentage of married people by far outnumbered that of Americans who were in other marital status within 30 years, but the period has experienced the declining trend in the proportion of married population, from about 70% in 1970 to nearly 60% thirty years later, and of the widowed from around 8% to 5%.
