INTRODUCTION 1.1 Definitions Signal A signal is a phenomenon arising in some environment that can be described quantitatively. Examples are: voltages and currents from electrical circuits, sound signals, visual signals etc. Systems A system is a mathematical model or abstraction of a physical process that relates inputs or external forces to the output or response of the system. Example: electrical circuit is a system where the current and voltage signals within the circuit are related. Signals Systems Nishan Canagarajah * 1.2 Objectives Develop the tools/methods necessary to assist in the analysis, prediction, control and synthesis of engineering (real life) systems. Analysis Analysis involves a detailed description of the signal or system and their interactions with each other. In analysis we are interested in how the system or signal behaves in a given situation. Synthesis Synthesis is concerned with designing or developing a system to meet certain design specifications or requirements for a particular application. In synthesis we are interested in identifying which system or signal is required for a given behaviour.
