School Meal Nutrition Analysis Report School meal nutrition analysis report from National School Lunch Program reviews conducted by CDE between 1998 and 2003. What Californians Should Know About School Lunches The California Department of Education (CDE) is responsible for ensuring that school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program offer healthy meals. At least once every five years, CDEs Nutrition Services Division (NSD) reviews one week of a school districts menus as a sample test to determine if school meals being offered meet the requirements of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). These nutritional requirements help ensure that Californias children receive healthy meals to promote learning and good health. The menu review done by NSD addresses only the full meal offered by the school and does not reflect items sold individually by the food service program or in snack bars, vending machines, or any other way outside of the school food service program. School Lunches Must Be Healthy California school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program must offer students a lunch meal that provides at least one-third of the RDA for: Protein Calcium Iron Vitamin A Vitamin C Calories Additionally, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires that no more than 30 percent of the calories in the school meal offered during a weeks time come from fat and that ten percent or less of calories come from saturated fat. Individual foods or daily meals can be over or under the target levels, but the meals offered should meet requirements when averaged over the entire week. School Lunches Make a Difference School meals can be a powerful tool in modeling good nutrition and starting students on a path to help prevent future chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, overweight, and obesity.
