* * Shakespeare praises the power of poem, ie, literature will keep transient beauty ever lasting. Here Shakespeare is immortalizing the young man in his poem. * * Shakespeare(1564-1616) * * Sonnets (十四行诗;商籁体) Francesco Petrarch Thomas Wyatt William Shakespeare * * Sonnet The sonnet is a poetic form which has been used in English since the mid-sixteenth century. The basic form is fourteen lines, and each line has ten syllables, usually in iambic pentameter. * * Two major patterns of rhyme The Italian or Petrarchan sonnet split into two parts, an octave and a sestet. The octave has the rhyme scheme of abba abba , followed by a sestet. The sestets rhyme pattern varies, though it is most often either cde cde or cdc dcd . * * Shakespearean (English) sonnets consist of three quatrains and a rhyming couplet with the rhyme scheme “abab cdcd efef gg”. * * A notable variant of Shakespearean sonnets is the Spenserian sonnet, with a rhyme scheme: “abab bcbc cdcd ee”. * * Metrical Pattern * * John is a student. Stresses occur at regular intervals in a line, alternating with unstressed syllables to form the rhythm. * * Rhyme I. Rhyme refers specifically to two words having the same final vowel and consonant sound. In other words, a rhyme occurs when the two final sounds in a syllable are identical. * * Metre When stress is organized to form regular rhythms, the term used for it is metre (格律). * * II. Meter: the pattern of rhythm in a poem The analysis of the meter of a poem usually consists of three steps: A. To examine the type of foot. B. To see how many feet there are in a line. C. To see the rhyme scheme of it. * * The foot is the unit of stressed and unstressed syllables which is repeated to form a metrical pattern. What is foot? (音步) * * 1.
