SUmmalTI， The evaluation of sustainable development，including quantitative evaluation about capability,level and harmonious degree of sustainable development，is hot issue and difficult problem in the research fields of sustainable development．The evaluation of agricultural and rural sustainabledevelopment plays an important and actual role in enriching the sustainable theory,drawing up and implement of strategy of sustainable agriculture and adjustment of policy and measure of agricultural and rural development．Based on the comprehensive，available， region--oriented，comparable and objective--oriented principle，this paper set up the evaluation index system of agricultural and rural sustainable development according to agricultural and rural situation of economy，society,resources and environment in Gansu province．Accordingly,in virtue of the changed principal component，the sustainable development level of Gansu’s agricultural and rural economy,society,resources and environment were figured out．In addition， the harmonious degree function was established and the harmonious degree of Gansu’s agricultural and rural sustainable development was get．The results show： During 1985～2003，agricultural and rural economy grew in a quick rate，but it fell behind average level of the whole nation in many aspects for its weak foundation；The infrastructure is weak and the modernization level is low in rural society because of its weak foundation of economy；The fragile ecologic environment has not bettered Thoroughly and became one of tremendous obstacles that influenced seriously the harmonious development of agricultural and rural economy，society,resources and environment；The harmonious degree of sub--system between economic，social，resources and environmental sustainable development was stilI unbalance and fluctuated easily wi也influence ofexternal factors． Aiming at the gap and problems，some corresponding c01．1llterrneasures are put forward based on the analysis of present situation of
