Acknowledgements I would like to express my thanks to my supervisor Dr. Wang Jingjun for his careful and beneficial guidance. Without his guidance, I would not complete this paper successfully. My gratitude also goes to all the teachers who have helped me School of Foreign Language in Qujing Normal University. From their lessons, I have learned a lot about language, literature and many useful knowledge. My sincere appreciation also goes to my classmates, because they helped me a lot in my study and daily life. Last but not the least, I owe a deep sense of gratitude to my beloved parents who have always been helping me out of difficulties and supporting me without a word of complaint. Abstract As is known to us, The Merchant of Venice is very famous, which is one of the most important comedies of Shakespeare. This play aims to praise kindheartedness, friendship and love. The main targets and contents can be studied from this work are analyzing its humanism ideology and character image. This play not only reflects the contradiction between the capitalists and usurers at the beginning of the Capitalist society, it also reveals the author’s humanist idea on money, law and religion in the Capitalist society. Combining with the main contents and backgrounds of the play, the author expresses some thoughts for society and human being. This thesis analyzes the main characters in the play one by one. In this thesis, the woman’s status has a great breakthrough and strongly stresses the feminine consciousness in Elizabethan era. This thesis speaks highly of Portia who is a representative of feminism with anti- tradition and modern ideas while it also makes a harsh criticism to Shylock who is a selfish and ruthles
