The characteristics of the modern trade union In fact, I know nothing about the modern trade union before, so I do some research for more information. In my following essay, at the beginning, I will give a brief introduction to the trade union. Then, I will analyze the main characteristics of the modern trade union. First,I will give my own definition of modern trade union. Personally, I think trade unions are associations of employees that have banded together to achieve common goals mainly to seek to improve the economic position of their members primarily by bargaining with employers within the broad framework of existing economic system. Their main tasks are not only trying to negotiate with management to get better pay and improve working conditions for their members, but also being involved in research into issues that may affect workers as well as providing educational services and legal assistance. But why does the trade union come into being? And how was it started and developed? The working classes lacked education, know-how, economic and social power, so they could be easily beaten by employers, the law and the government. In order to protect the privilege of the employees, some associations were set up, which became the trade union later. At that time, founders were utopian and na?ve. Both leaders and members suffered from democratic ideals, which they put before reality. They believed that the brotherhood of man was close. At last, most of them failed because of a lack of co-ordination and money. Trade unions and/or collective bargaining were outlawed from no later than the middle of the 14th century when the Ordinance of Labourers was enacted in the Kingdom of England. Union organizing would eventually be outlawed everywhere and remain so until the middle of the 19th century.
