Affirmative –negative Expression in Translation Lecturer: Hao Guangli Objectives: After learning this section, students should be able to: Know why affirmative-negative or negative-affirmative expressing way should be employed in translation; Know related information about affirmative-negative or negative-affirmative expression in Chinese and English language; Know how to employ affirmative-negative expression both in E-C and C-E translation I.Reasons for using Affirmative-negative or negative-affirmative expressing way. During the process of E-C or C-E translation, due to different ways or habit of expressing, the transfer of affirmative expression into negative one or vice versa is not only frequent but necessary. The reasons of using this method is, first, to express the exact meaning of the source language smoothly; second, to conform to norms of the target language. II. Brief definition and related information on affirmative-negative expression When English words or sentences contain the words never, no, not, or suffix non-，un-，im-，in-，ir-，-less, etc and Chinese words or sentences contain the characters“不”、“没”、“无”、“未”、“甭”、“别”、“休”、“莫”、“非”、“毋”、“勿”etc，these words or sentences are called negative expression The method which expresses affirmative sentences in a negative way is called affirmative-negative expression. In the meantime,the method which expresses negative sentences in an affirmative way is called negative-affirmative expression. They belong to the catogory of extension or rhetorics. .
