Compounding (Composition) （复合词）(P24-28) The formation of new words by joining two or more stems is called compounds. According to Quirk (1985) : A compound is “ a Lexical unit consisting of more than one stem and functioning both grammatically and semantically as a single word” A. Words in network Compounding can take place within any of the word classes, such as prepositions and conjunctions: without , throughout, moreover; and pronouns: oneself, somebody There are different (three major ) ways to compound English words: 1. Noun compounds: N+n: chair-person, toilet paper; polar bear prep+n: byproduct, afternoon, overcoat 2. Adjective compounds: N+v+ing: air-conditioning, brain-storming V+ing +n: marketing plan, walking stick Adv+ v: outbreak, downfall V+adv: sit-in, handout, layout 2. Adjective compounds: N+v-ing: record-breaking ,time-consuming; A+v+ing: easy-going, high-pitching Adv+v+ing: out-going, forth-coming; 3.
