A Brief Analysis on the Construction of Context and Conversation in Middle School Teaching【Abstract】Context is important in communication and conversation.Without a certain context we don’t know what the speaker is talking about. So it is necessary for us to make clear the relationship between context and conversation. In this paper I will discuss what is context, the characteristics of it and how it affects conversation.【Key words】Context; conversation; meaningⅠ.IntroductionContext doesn’t have rules.Every word needs a context to give it meaning. If you don’t know the context, the word is nonsense. You have no “clue” what it means.A word’s context is its “clue”.A conversation cannot go on without a certain context. The goal of conversation is to present information, and is to make yourself understood. The listener must find the context of a conversation.Ⅱ.What is context?Halliday defined context as the “total environment in which a text unfolds” (1978:5).Language use has its own social grammar of roles, settings, rules of speaking, and standards of interpretation.Yet meaningful context is essential for language learning has been widely recognized.Generally speaking, there are five kinds of contexts: linguistic, situational, international, cultural, and intertextual (Claire Kramsch,46).Persons shape context in dialogue with one another, saying things about the world and thus making statements about themselves and their relationship to one another.Through this dialogue, they exchange and negotiate meaning that belongs to a community’s stock of common knowledge.Ⅲ.Context and ConversationUnderstanding a conversation, then, involving answering these main questions: (a) What did the speaker intend to say; (b) What did the speaker intend to imply; and it is obvious that context or background assumptions play a crucial role in answering these questions.1.Situational context and conversation.Conversation depends on context.Context does great effect on meaning, which affects conversation directly
