Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian-American teacher named Dr. James Naismith while he was working in the US city of Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented basketball because he wanted a game that was not too rough and that could be played in an indoor gymnasium. The sport became very popular because it didn’t require much equipment, it could be played indoors (so it could be played in winter or when it was raining outside), and it was safe. Nowadays, almost every primary and high school in the US has basketball nets in their gymnasium and many have nets outside as well. Students compete in teams within their school, between different schools, and even between different school districts.
