The thirteen American colonies won their independence from Great Britain in 1783, as a result of the American Revolution. Once they were free, they came together as the United States of America. The leaders of this new country, the Founding Fathers, knew that if the United States was going to survive, they had to create a strong central government to make laws and decide how the country would be run. Representatives from each state had a meeting in Philadelphia in May 1787, called the Constitutional Convention, to talk about how this new government would work. The talks they had were so secret that many of the windows in Independence Hall, where the convention was held, were nailed shut. Four months later, they presented the American people with the Constitution of the United States, a document that explained how the new government would function. * * * I Grew Up to Be President Presented by: Yu Rui introduction This new government had three branches: a legislative branch to make laws, a judicial branch to oversee the courts, and an executive branch led by the president. The representatives at the Constitutional Convention unanimously elected George Washington the first president of the United States. Since 1789, when Washington was elected, there have been forty-four presidents. Every four year, the people of the United States cast their votes to decide who will be presidents. Some of these men, such as Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt, have led the country through difficult times of war and crisis. Others have led the American people during times of peace, freedom, and prosperity. All of them have worked to make the United States of America a stronger and better place. George Washington grew up on a farm in Virginia. Exploring the woods was one of his favorite things to do, especially on horseback. He also had lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic. He didnt have enough money to go to college, so he became a surveyor
