 The thirteen American colonies won their independence from Great Britain in 1783, as a result of the American Revolution. Once they were free, they came together as the United States of America. The leaders of this new country, the Founding Fathers, knew that if the United States was going to survive, they had to create a strong central government to make laws and decide how the country would be run. Representatives from each state had a meeting in Philadelphia in May 1787, called the Constitutional Convention, to talk about how this new government would work. The talks they had were so secret that many of the windows in Independence Hall, where the convention was held, were nailed shut. Some of these men, such as Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt, have led the country through difficult times of war and crisis.
