Picture 3: The study of the stars (Astronomy) looks at the history of the universe, what is found in the universe (stars, planets, moons, black holes, etc), the planets in our solar system, the moon, and the sun. Instruments that are used are telescopes. X-ray instruments, satellites and radio telescopes. Picture 4: The study of nature (Biology) looks at all living things in nature on our planet, including organisms that cause diseases both in humans and in animals and crops. Instruments that are used are microscopes, etc. We hear about volcanoes and earthquakes in newspapers and on TV. However, if you live in the south or in Taiwan, you may hear about them much more frequently. We hear perhaps only once or twice about comets in the news. Sometimes there is more news about astronomy, for example space travel or Mars exploration. We hear quite regularly about biology and disease in the news, although only one or two big stories per year, for example SARS, AIDS and bird flu.
