ЛИСТА НА АПСТРАКТИ/ LIST OF ABSTRACTS _____________________________ DEMOGRAPHIC REVIEW OF PIROT DISTRICT: CHALLENGES AND POTENTIALS IVKOVIC, Marija*, TODORIC, Jovana Geographical Institute “Jovan Cvijic” SASA, Belgrade, Serbia. marija.ivkovic22@ The purpose of this paper is to examine the current demographic development of Pirot District, through the analysis of the total population trends, changes in the percentage share of the young and old population, the proportion of fertile and working contingent. The specifics of Pirot District’s position are, except mountainous morphology and altitude from 290 to 2169 m, its location on the border, the position on the branch C of the European Corridor 10, and nearness of the contractive tourist area of Mountain Stara Planina. The basic assumption of this study is that hilly-mountain relief of Pirot Region, together with with its border (peripheral) position, manifests as a challenge to its demographic development, but also as a potential (good traffic location and the opportunity for tourism develop) which can provide demographic and socio-economic revitalization of this area. If we look at the historical development of the construction of residential buildings we shall realize that this type of location implied for the construction of individual houses.
