Internationally known for her novels and short stories. Booker Prize winner (Possession). Appointed CBE in 1990 and DBE in 1999. Born Antonia Susan Drabble, 24 August 1936, in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Daughter of John Drabble, QC and Kathleen Marie Bloor, a judge and the sister of novelist Margaret Drabble. Family Daughter of His Honour John Frederick Drabble, QC and late Kathleen Marie Bloor. Sister of novelist Margaret Drabble. Education Sheffield High School; The Mount School, York; Newnham College, Cambridge (BA Hons; Hon. Fellow 1999); Bryn Mawr College, Philadelphia, USA; Somerville College, Oxford. Marriage 1st, 1959, First husband, Ian Charles Rayner Byatt (Sir I. C. R. Byatt) marriage dissolved. 1969; one daughter (one son deceased) 2nd, 1969, second husband, Peter John Duffy; two daughters. Career Lecturer in literature at Oxford, London and Cambridge universities 1962-83, She left in 1983 to concentrate on writing full-time; member of Kingman Committee on English Language, 1987-88; Management Committee, Society of Authors, 1984-88; Board of British Council, 1993-1998. Influences Byatt has been influenced by Henry James and George Eliot as well as Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, and Robert Browning, in merging realism and naturalism with fantasy. In her quartet of novels about mid-century England, she is clearly indebted to D.H. Lawrence, particularly The Rainbow and Women in Love. There and in other works, Byatt alludes to, and builds upon, themes from Romantic and Victorian literature. Byatt conceives of fantasy as as an alternative to--rather than an escape from--everyday life, and often
