* * * * * * * * Is the 5th-order rainbow observable? The 5th- and 6th-order rainbows are situated in Alexanders dark band between the primary- and secondary rainbows (R:42° and R:51° respectively: the two ‘common rainbows, or 1st- and 2nd-order rainbows). The 3th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th. and so on -order rainbows are the so-called high-order rainbows or laboratory rainbows (as I call them): they are produced by multiple reflections of sunlight inside water-droplets and are sadly enough unobservable in nature (these bows re very broad and weak: if it wasnt because of its angular proximity to the sun, the 3th-order rainbow should be well observable, but the irradiating effect of Newtons zero-order rainbow spoils the show (the zero-order rainbow is the backward transmitted sunlight through the spherical raindrops, creating an area in the sky of an almost uniform brilliance: a diffuse glow around the sun...). Now: some of you already know that by looking through a 90° prism (not a 60° prism) you can bring all the spectral colors of the (primary) rainbow back to white: as long as you know how to hold the prism you will see the primary bow as a very bright, sharp-edged white arc + an adjacent system of at least 5 or 6 sharp supernumerary arcs ! For those who are unfamiliar with this technique: you MUST try this out ! By adding a polarisation-filter to the prism you can make the arcs even brighter! (the rainbow is one of the most polarized phenomena in nature). * Notice the contrast between the sky inside the arc and outside it. When one studies the refraction of sunlight on a raindrop one finds that there are many rays emerging at angles smaller than the rainbow ray, but essentially no light from single internal reflections at angles greater than this ray. Thus there is a lot of light within the bow, and very little beyond it. Because this light is a mix of all the rainbow colors, it is white. In the case of the secondary rainbow, the rainbow ray is the smallest angle and
