City is called HAOTE in Mongolian, when the Mongols established YUAN dynasty, they called the central plains’ city HAOTE too. Later HAOTE evolved into HUTONG and NONGTANG. Mongolian is great harmony: HUTONG is the simplified version of YUAN dynasty’s political slogan “Mongolian is great harmony”. The history of HUTONG HUTONG originates from YUAN dynasty, the number of which reached more than 6,000 in Beijing. The earliest HUTONG are located between Chaoyang Mennei street and Dongsi, which are planned tidy. The distance between HUTONG is nearly same.
