Currently, visualizationand imagery techniques are becoming a routine part ofthe treatment of the ill. Mounting evidence shows theeectiveness of using self-imagery to encourage the im-mune system to boost its eort to defend the body fromdisease. Furthermore, while stress has been shown toretard the immune system, relaxation has the oppositeeect. To that end, we are developing a virtual real-ity visualization tool for cancer patients called StayingAlive. The system provides a means for users to relaxwhile directly visualizing their immune systems ght-ing o their diseases. White, red, and malignant bloodcells are modeled as simple autonomous agents in theenvironment. The user controls a white blood cell, nav-igates through the blood stream, and \digests malig-nant cells found along the way. To control the virtualenvironment, the user, free of wires and other such en-cumberments, engages the system simply by standingin a room, practicing Tai Chi gestures. Computer vi-sion techniques are employed to recognize the gesturesin real time.1 IntroductionThe benets of visualization techniques have been no-ticed by such disparate groups as athletes and cancerpatients. Athletes are told that they must picture them-selves hitting the ball, making the catch, scoring the goalto be able to do so. Similarly, cancer patients aroundthe nation can visit almost any cancer center and enrollin programs to learn how to visualize their own immunesystem ghting o their disease.
