References Greetings and leave-takings are important components in phatic communion/utterance, which has deep social and cultual mark, used to establish and maintain appropriate and harmonious interpersonal relationship. Greetings: social communicative spoken language in which human beings intentionally make presence known to each other, to show attention to, and to sugget a type of relationship or social status. Leave-takings, also called farewells or partings, are part of conversational routines, and social communicative language in which human beings say goodbye to each other; 1. Introduction Greetings and leave-takings can be expressed both audibly and physically, and often involve a combination of the two. Greetings and leave-takings are highly culture and situation-specific and may change within a culture depending on social status and relationship, and they exist in all known human cultures. In some languages and cultures, the same word or gesture is used as both greeting and leave-taking. For example, “Good day” in English Researches from the perspective of greetings Chen Songcen (Chen,1988:25) generalized four kinds of greetings in Chinese daily lives and took account of social factors such as age, gender, education background and region, through which social distribution and tendency of greetings in Chinese would be predicted. Qu WeiguoChen Liufang(QuChen,2001:) analyzed the expression of greeting from the perspective of language form, topic and pragmatic constraints.
