[Keywords:] antibiotics; animal husbandry and aquaculture; bacterial resistance ABSTRACT The increasing emergence of bacterial pathogens resistant to currently available antimicrobial agents continues to drive international efforts to address the issue of drug resistance as a major public health and food safety issues. Accumulating evidences indicate that the use of antimicrobial agents in livestock breeding is also an important contributing factor in the emergence of resistant bacteria and dissemination of resistant genes. Therefore, it is important to understand the use of antimicrobial agents in food  producing animals and the potential risks to human health for controlling and banning the use of antimicrobials in livestock.
