The majority of polymorphisms were isolate-specific suggesting the existence of an heterogeneousinfectingpopulationthatevolvedfromasingleinfectingstrainofS.aureus.Thegeneticvariationidentified correlatedwithdifferencesingrowthrate,hemolyticactivity,andantibioticsensitivity,implyingaprofoundeffectonthe ecologyofS.aureus.Inparticular,ahighfrequencyofmutationsinlociassociatedwiththealternatetranscriptionfactor SigB, were observed. The identification of genes under diversifying selection during long-term infection may inform the designofnoveltherapeuticsforthecontrolofrefractorychronicinfections.
