Ongoing activity differs between light and deep anesthesia and cortical response properties are modulated in dependence of anesthetic dosage. We investigated how anesthesia level affectscross-modalinteractionsinprimarysensorycortex.Toexaminethis,wecontinuouslymeasuredtheeffectsofvisual andauditorystimulationduringincreasinganddecreasingisofluranelevelinthemousevisualcortexandthesubiculum (frombaselineat0.7to2.5vol%andreverse).Auditoryevokedburstactivityoccurredinvisualcortexafteratransition duringincreaseofanesthesialevel.Atthesametime,auditoryandvisualevokedburstsoccurredinthesubiculum,even though the subiculum was unresponsive to both stimuli previous to the transition. This altered sensory excitability was linkedtothepresenceofburstsuppressionactivityincortex,andtoaregularslowburstsuppressionrhythm(,0.2Hz)in thesubiculum.Theeffectdisappearedduringreturntolightanesthesia.Theresultsshowthatpseudo-heteromodalsensory burstresponsescanappearinbrainstructuresasaneffectofananesthesiainducedstatechange.
