Background:Amechanicalnoxiousstimulatorisusefulforstudiesofpain,bothfor
clinicandbasicresearch.Weproposetouseapinchstimulatorthatcannotonly
University,Taipei,Taiwan
generateaquantitative,reproduciblenoxiouspinchbutalsosimultaneouslyprovide
asynchronousexternaltriggersignal,whichisessentialforacquisitionofevoked
potentials.
Methods:Forethicalconsiderations,audibleandvisualaidswereincorporatedso
thatpinchforcecouldberegulatedwithinapredeterminedlevel.Reproducibilityof
thenociceptiveresponsesevokedbythisdevicewasvalidated.Thedevicewas
constructedwithasimplecircuit,andtheelementbuild-inwasdelicatelyselected
fortheminimumrequiredtoproduceevokedpotentials.
Results:Themagnitudeoftheforceoutputislinearlyproportionaltothevolts
producedbythedevice(i.e.,duringthepinch).Increasesinforcecorrespondto
increasesinthenumberofactionpotentialsinduced.
Conclusions:Thisdevicemaybeusefulforstudyingthemechanismsofnociceptive
signalprocessinginthebrainthroughapplicationofreproducible,noxiouspinch
stimuli.
Background
Nociceptionisaprimitivesensethatplaysanimportantroleinprotectingorganisms
fromdangerousconditions. However,manyresearchers haveencountereddifficulties
in studying nociception, due to lacking of appropriate noxious stimulators that can
induceareproducible painsensation. Electrical stimulators arecommonlyused [1,2]
becausetheyareeasytosynchronize.However,electricalstimulationwillactivatevar-
ious types of nerve fibers, which results in ambiguous sensation. CO2 laser hasbeen
used as specifically noxious heat stimulation [3]. However, nociceptive responses
inducedarenotthesameastheresponsesevokedbymechanicalpin
