Methods:Thirty-ninepatientswithadiagnosisofaprimaryanxietydisorderoramooddisorderwithcomorbid anxietysymptomswereenrolledinthisstudy.Patientswithastabledoseofantidepressanttherapywere randomizedaccordingtoa2:1probabilityofreceivingeitherquetiapineXRoraplaceboadjunctivetreatmentfor 8weeks.TheefficacywasassessedbytheHamiltonAnxietyRatingScale(HAM-A)andtheClinicalGlobal Impressionofseverity(CGI-S)scoreatbaseline,week1,4,and8. Results:Atotalof35patientswereincludedinthisintention-totreat(ITT)populationfortheefficacyanalysis (quetiapineXR:22patients;placebo:13patients).Atweek4,statisticallysignificantdifferenceswereobservedon boththeHAM-Ascore(p=0.003)andtheCGI-Sscore(p=0.025),favouringthequetiapineXR(?13.00±4.14) comparedtoplacebo(?6.63±5.42).However,nostatisticallysignificantdifferencewasobservedbetweenthetwo groupswithregardtochangesfromthebaselinetoweek8ontheHAM-Ascore(p=0.332)ortheCGI-Sscore (p=0.833). Conclusions:AugmentationofantidepressanttreatmentwithquetiapineXRdidnotresultinclinicalimprovement accordingtotheoutcomemeasureofanxietyusingtheHAM-AandCGI-Sscoresatweek8,amongthepatients witheitheraprimaryanxietydisorderoramooddisorderwithcomorbidanxietysymptoms.However,treatment withquetiapineXRasanadjuncttoantidepressanttherapyappearedtoprovideashort-termbenefitat4weeks.
