Abstract Background:Oralrabiesvaccination(ORV)inrabiesinfectedregionsshouldtargettheprimaryrabiesvector species,whichinLithuaniaincludesraccoondogsaswellasredfoxes.SpecificinvestigationsonORVinraccoon dogsareneedede.g.evaluationofvaccineeffectivenessunderfieldconditions.Theobjectiveofthecurrentstudy wastoinvestigatetheefficacyoftheORVprogramme2006-2010inLithuaniabyexaminingthenumberofrabies casesandestimatingtheprevalencesofatetracyclinebiomarker(TTC)andrabiesvirusantibodiesinraccoondogs. Methods:From2006to2010,12.5millionrabiesvaccine-baitsweredistributedbyaircraft.Baitingoccurredtwice peryear(springandautumn),targetingraccoondogsandredfoxesina63,000km2areaofLithuania.The mandiblesofraccoondogsfounddeadorkilledinthevaccinationareawereanalyzedbyfluorescencemicroscopy forthepresenceoftheTTC.Rabiesvirusseraneutralizinganti-glycoproteinantibodytitresweredeterminedusing anindirectELISAmethodandseroconversion(0.5EU/ml)rateswereestimated. Results:Duringthestudyperiod,51.5%ofraccoondogmandibleswerepositiveforTTC.1688of3260tested adultsand69of175testedcubswereTTCpositive.Forty-sevenpercentofraccoondogserumsampleswere positiveforrabiesvirusantibodies.302of621investigatedadultsand33of95investigatedcubswereseropositive. Inthesametime302of684and43of124testedsampleswereTTCandELISApositiveinspring;whereas1455of 2751and292of592testedsampleswereTTCandELISApositiveinautumn.Therewasapositivecorrelation betweenthenumberofTTCandantibodypositiveanimalsforbothadultandcubgroups. Conclusions:ORVwaseffectiveinreducingtheprevalenceofrabiesintheraccoondogpopulationinLithuania. TheprevalenceofrabiescasesinraccoondogsinLithuaniadecreasedfrom60.7%in2006-2007to6.5%in 2009-2010.
