Methods:Weanalyzed9yearsofpubliclyavailabledatafromtheNationalHeart,Lung,andBloodInstituteGrowth andHealthStudy,for2379girls(1213blackand1166white)enrolledatage9-10yearsin1987-1988andfollowed annually.Individualgrowthtrajectoriesofwaistcircumferencewereconstructedforgirlswith3annualmeasures. Mixedmodelswereusedtocomparechangesinwaistcircumferenceduringadolescencebetweenblackand whitefemales.BMIandageatmenarchewereincludedinthemodels. Results:Ateachage,blackfemaleshadsignificantlyhigherwaistcircumference.Meanannualincreaseinwaist circumferencewassignificantlyhigherforblackfemalescomparedtowhitefemales(1.46cm/yrvs.1.36cm/yr, respectively).AfteradjustingforBMI,themeanannualincreaseinwaistcircumferenceforwhitefemaleswas significantlyhigherthanforblackfemales(0.08cm/yrvs.-0.07cm/yr,respectively).Theserelationshipsremained significantafteradjustingforageatmenarche. Conclusions:Blackfemaleshadsignificantlysteeperincreasesinwaistcircumferenceoveradolescencethanwhite females.AfteradjustingforBMIandageatmenarche,however,theannualincreaseinwaistcircumferencefor blackfemaleswassignificantlyshallowerthanfortheirwhitepeers.Thesedatasuggestracialdifferencesinthe depositionoffatovertheadolescentperiod.
