Methods:DataonsuicideanddemographicvariablesineachLGAbetween1999and2003wereacquiredfrom theAustralianBureauofStatistics.Anagestandardisedmortality(ASM)rateforsuicidewascalculatedattheLGA level.GIStechniqueswereusedtoexaminethegeographicaldifferenceofsuicideacrossdifferentareas. Results:Farnorthandnorth-easternQueensland(i.e.,CookandMorningtonShires)hadthehighestsuicide incidenceinbothgenders,whilethesouth-westernareas(i.e.,BarcooandBauhiniaShires)hadthelowest incidenceinbothgenders.Indifferentagegroups(≤24years,25to44years,45to64years,and≥65years),ASM ratesofsuicidevariedwithgenderattheLGAlevel.MorningtonandsixotherLGAswithlowsocioeconomic statusintheupperSoutheasthadsignificantspatialclustersofhighsuiciderisk. Conclusions:TherewasanotabledifferenceinASMratesofsuicideattheLGAlevelinQueensland.SomeLGAs hadsignificantspatialclustersofhighsuiciderisk.Thedeterminantsofthegeographicaldifferenceofsuicide shouldbeaddressedinfutureresearch.
