Abstract
Objectives:Thestudyobjectivewastoassessthefeasibilityofacomputerizedalcohol-screeninginterview(CASI)
programtoidentifyat-riskalcoholusersamongadultemergencydepartment(ED)patients.Thestudyaimedto
evaluatethefeasibilityofimplementingacomputerizedscreening,briefintervention,andreferraltotreatment
(SBIRT)programwithinabusyurbanEDsetting,toreportonaccuratedeploymentofalcoholscreeningresults,and
toassesscomprehensionandsatisfactionwithCASIfrombothpatientandresearchstaffperspectives.
Methods:Researchassistants(RAs)screenedaconveniencesampleofmedicallystableEDpatients.TheRAs
broughtCASItopatients’bedsides,andpatientsenteredtheirownalcoholconsumptiondata.TheCASI
interventionconsistedofanalcoholusescreeningidentificationtest,apersonalizednormativefeedbackprofile,
NIAAAlow-riskdrinkingeducationalmaterials,andtreatmentreferrals(whenindicated).
Results:Fivehundredseventeenpatientswereenrolled.Themedianageofparticipantswas37years(range,
21-85years);37%weremen,62%wereHispanic,7%wereCaucasian,30%wereAfricanAmerican,and2%were
multiracial.Eightypercentreportedregularuseofcomputersathome.Eightypercentofpatientsapproached
consentedtoparticipate,and99%ofthosewhostartedCASIwereabletocompleteit.Twopercentofinterviews
wereinterruptedformedicaltestsandprocedures,however,nopatientsrequiredbreaksfromusingCASIfornot
feelingwell.TheCASIprogramaccuratelyprovidedalcoholriskeducationtopatients100%ofthetime.Thirty-two
percentofpatientsinthesamplescreenedpositiveforat-riskdrinking.SixtypercentofpatientsreportedthatCASI
increasedtheirknowledgeofsafedrinkinglimits,39%reportedsomelikelinesstochangetheiralcoholuse,and
28%reportedsomeintentiontoconsultahealthcareprofessionalabouttheiralcoholuseasaresultoftheir
