(Institute of A ntibiotics, H uashan Hosp ital, Fudan niversity, Shanghai 2 0004 0, China) Abstract: Objective T o investigate the resistance of clinical isolates from hospitals in several regions of China, in 20 06 .Meth ods Eight general hospitals and two childrens hospitals were involved in this program. Bacterial susceptibility testing was car ried out according to an agreed protocol using KirbyBauer method. Results were analyzed according to CLSI 2 00 6. Results A total of 33 94 5 clinical isolates were collected from January through December 200 6, of which gram negative microorganisms and gram positive cocci accounted for 68 . 2% and 31. 8% respectively. In the 202 strains of S. p neumonia from adults, 92 .1%, 5. 4%, 2. 5% were identified as penicillinsusceptible ( PSSP), intermediate ( PISP) andresistant ( PRSP) , respec tively. Of the 356 strains of S. p neumonia from children, 11.8%, 6 8. 5 % and 19. 7% were PSSP, PISP and PRSP, respec tively. Betalactamase production was positive in 25 % of H . inf luenz ae isolates. ethicillin resistant strains in S. aureus ( RSA) and RCNS accounted for an average of 5 8. 4 % and 76 . 3% respectively. However, the prevalence of RSA and RCNS was only 12 .4 % and 3. 8% respectively in the two childrens hospitals. No staphylococcal isolatewas found resistant to vancomycin, t
