Pay attention to these words. dialect standard geography recognize play a part 1. The Chinese language also has many dialects. Perhaps you know some of them. Talk about them with a partner. 2. Make a list of the dialects you and your partner have heard. 3. Please tell an interesting or funny story that shows great difference between dialects in Chinese. If you cant tell a story, you may discuss why putonghua is used in China. There are 3 dialogs in Part 3. (p13) Act them out. Find the British and American words which are different but have the same meaning. There is a longer dialog in Part 1. (p15) Act it out and make the similar dialogs according to Part 2. Here are 3 tips which may help you. TIP 2 You can select actual streets and locations in your hometown for giving directions when making the dialog. LISTENING (p14) Look at the pictures and the exercises. Guess the main idea of the passage. Then listen and pay attention to the accent and intonation. Listen again. If you are still not sure about it, you can listen to the following in a more formal way. The right sequence is: 1. Buford, Billy Bob and Lester went swimming. 2. Lester saw a catfish. 3. Lester thought the catfishwould eat him. 4. Lester climbed a tree. 5. Buford and Billy Bob laughed. 6. Now Lester is too afraid to visit the place. Suggest answers for exercises4. 1. He believes it’s almost a different country from tne USA. The listening tells us. 2. The boys thought that the catfish was almost the size of a house. 3. He thought the catfish would eat him. 4.
