John Donne (1572-1631) Life Experience Major Literary Works Features of His poetry Life Story John Donne, the founder of metaphysical poetry, was born in 1572 to a Roman Catholic family. Studied in Oxford and Cambridge, but took no degree for not taking the Oath of Supremacy His brother’s death in 1593 made him question his faith. Secretly married Anne More in 1601. Refused to take Anglican orders in 1607, but entered the Anglican Church in 1615 Appointed Dean of Saint Paul’s in 1621till his death. Died in London on March 31, 1631. 2 periods of his literary career: First Period (1593-1617): most of The Elegies, Satires and many of the Songs and Sonnets Second Period (1618-1631): religious poems and prose works, especially sermons revealing his spiritual devotion to God The First Period In 1593, Satire (his first book of poems) and Songs and Sonnets (love poems) In 1607, Divine Poems (arguing that suicide is not a sin in itself) In 1610, Pseudo-Martyr and in 1611 A valediction: Forbidding Mourning The Second Period In 1618, Holy Sonnets and Hymn to Christ at the Author’s Last Going into Germany (laden with apprehension of death) In 1624, Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (private meditations ) Hymn to God, my God, In my Sickness (last writing before his death) Features of His Poetry Frequent uses of conceits (extended metaphors involving dramatic contrasts) * * John Donne 2. Involves argument, sometimes in rigid syllogistic (三段论的)form, with brief, simple language John Donne wrote A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning to his wife, Anne More Donne, to comfort her while he sojourned in France on government business and she remained home in England. John and Anne More Donne John Donne worked for a time as secretary to Sir Thomas Edgerton, the Keeper of the Great Seal of England.
