John Donne (1572-1631) Life Experience Major Literary Works Features of His poetry Life Story John Donne,　the founder of metaphysical poetry, was born in 1572 to a Roman Catholic family. Studied in Oxford and Cambridge, but took no degree for not taking the Oath of Supremacy His brother’s death in 1593 made him question his faith. Secretly married Anne More in 1601. Refused to take Anglican orders in 1607, but entered the Anglican Church in 1615 Appointed Dean of Saint Paul’s in 1621till his death.
