Conference on Creative Education (CCE2011) An Investigation of Children’s Visual Perception of the Mixed Gray Colors Hongmei XIE School of Preschool Teacher Education, Xi’an University of Arts and Science, Xi’an, China Email : Abstract: This paper investigates the visual color perception and cognitive ability of 3-to-7-year-old children with a view to improving children painting teaching on color representation. A gray color perception test was conducted on 615 children from eight kindergartens and one primary school. The test took the form of color card identification, asking children to describe or name the focal color of the gray card. The data indicate that 92 percent of 3-to-5-year-old children can accurately name the inclined color of the mixed gray, and that the perception of 6-to-7-year-old children approximates to that of adults. The results suggest that children’s pref- erence to a single color or several fixed colors in their painting should not be identified with their inability to perceive a large array of colors, and that the visual perception of the mixed gray colors is inherent in human beings on the physiological ground. In view of this, children painting teachers should readjust the content on children’s painting color teaching, and shake off the misleading traditional idea that children can solely per- ceive several basic colors so as to maximize teaching efficiency.
