The efficient of people and efficient use of equipment can be affected by the way manufacturing and service facilities are arranged. Layout: is a physical configuration of departments, workstations and equipment in the conversion process. Facility Layout: the overall arrangement of machines, departments, work centre, equipment, material handling, service facilities and other to facilitate the movement of works, customers or materials through a system. Definition: More convenience to customer Improved employee morale and safe working conditions Higher utilization of space, equipment and people Importance of Layout Design Improved flow of information, materials or people The Objectives of Facility Layout Factors that Influence Layout Basic Layout Types1)Process Layout- found in firms that produce customized, low volume product that may require different processing requirements and sequences of operations. (Group together by function)- Example: machine shop, hospitals, banks, libraries and universities. 2)Product Layout- found in flow shops(repetitive assembly and process or continuous flow industries)- produce high volume, highly standardized products. Example: automobile manufacturing works 3) Fixed Position Layout- appropriate for large and heavy product.- require portable resources.- example: battleships, hospital operating room, construction, aircraft and home repair.
