June Jordan’ family: Father: a night shift postal worker. Mother : a nurse. Jordan’s home situation was a source of conflict and anguish because of her father’s physical abuse and her mother’s denial. This environment resulted in Jordan’s writing extensively about her parents and their positive and negative influences. Her marriage and her death She married a student. Being in an interracial marriage in the 1950’s was difficult. The marriage ended in divorce. She died of breast cancer on June 14, 2002. And she had been battling cancer since 1970’s. Her influence and works She was a poet, novelist, essayist and political activist, one of the world’s most articulate and essential voices. Her works expressed conscious optimism ---- the unity of justice , equality and tenderness. She was very productive, about 26 books, mainly poetry. She published many volumes of poetry and essays, the most published African American writer in history. Internationally celebrated for her creative accomplishments, she was Professor of African American Studies at the University of California at Berkley where she directed the enormously popular Poetry for the People Program. She had been professor of English at more than seven North American universities and colleges, including City College and Yale University. She had been honored at the United Nations, the United States Congress, and the Library of Congress, a truly remarkable women of our time, a woman of talent and range. Background Information The Race Relations Act The Race Relations Act is concerned with peoples actions and the effects of their actions, not their opinions or beliefs. Racial discrimination is not the same as racial prejudice. It is not necessary to prove that the other person intended to discriminate against you: you only have to show that you received less favorable treatment as a result of what they did.
